RelevanceGFM2 is a mitochondrial translation elongation factor. Its role in the regulation of normal mitochondrial function and in different disease states attributed to mitochondrial dysfunction is not known. Eukaryotes contain two protein translational systems, one in the cytoplasm and one in the mitochondria. Mitochondrial translation is crucial for maintaining mitochondrial function and mutations in this system lead to a breakdown in the respiratory chain oxidative phosphorylation system and to impaired maintenance of mitochondrial DNA.

Paraffin-embedded mouse testis tissue stained for GFM2 using ab229463 at 1/1000 dilution in immunohistochemical analysis.
All lanes : Anti-GFM2 antibody (ab229463) at 1/500 dilution
Lane 1 : HEK-293T (human epithelial cell line from embryonic kidney transformed with large T antigen) whole cell extracts
Lane 2 : HepG2 (human liver hepatocellular carcinoma cell line) whole cell extracts
Lysates/proteins at 30 µg per lane.
Predicted band size: 87 kDa
7.5% SDS-PAGE gel.
HeLa (human epithelial cell line from cervix adenocarcinoma) cells stained for GFM2 (green) using ab229463 at 1/500 dilution in ICC/IF. Cells were fixed with 2% paraformaldehyde/culture medium at 37oC for 30 minutes.
Nuclear counterstain: Hoechst 33342 (blue).
