FunctionComponent of heterochromatin that recognizes and binds histone H3 tails methylated at 'Lys-9' (H3K9me), leading to epigenetic repression. In contrast, it is excluded from chromatin when 'Tyr-41' of histone H3 is phosphorylated (H3Y41ph). Can interact with lamin-B receptor (LBR). This interaction can contribute to the association of the heterochromatin with the inner nuclear membrane. Involved in the formation of functional kinetochore through interaction with MIS12 complex proteins.

Predicted band size: 22 kDa
Dilution buffer: TBS-Tween containing 5% skimmed milk.
HeLa (Human epithelial cell line from cervix adenocarcinoma) cells stained for HP1 alpha using ab231559 at a dilution of 1/500 (Left panel) in ICC/IF. Cells were fxed with 4% formaldehyde for 10 minutes and blocked with PBS/TX-100 containing 5% normal goat serum and 1% BSA. An anti-rabbit antibody conjugated to Alexa-Fluor®488 was used as the secondary antibody. Central panel is DAPI. Right panel merged images.
