The antibody is used to detect HTLV I surface protein and its precursor in lysates prepared from virons or infected cells. Using immunoblotting and/or radioimmunoprecipitation analysis, the biosynthesis and metabolism of viral surface protein may be studied.

RelevanceHTLV I gp46 surface protein is processed from its precursor gp62. It attaches the virus to the host cell by binding to its receptor. This interaction triggers the refolding of the transmembrane protein (TM) and is thought to activate its fusogenic potential by unmasking its fusion peptide. Fusion occurs at the host cell plasma membrane.
