Cancer cells rely on stromal cells within the tumor microenvironment to fuel their high energy requirements. Reactive oxygen species are used within cancer-associated cells to create a highly glycolytic and catabolic environment resulting in the secretion of lactate, ketone bodies, and glutamine. These key nutrients are then used by cancer cells to fuel oxidative phosphorylation resulting in very high levels of energy production.
