Adenosyl Homocysteine is a critical intermediate in the biological process known as the methionine cycle. It is also referred to as S-Adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) with a molecular mass of approximately 384.46 g/mol. This compound forms as a by-product of methylation reactions after the methyl group transfer from S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM). Adenosyl Homocysteine hydrolase further processes it into homocysteine and adenosine. Expression of Adenosyl Homocysteine is ubiquitous occurring across various cell types and tissues in the body.
Biological function summary

Adenosyl homocysteine plays an important role in regulating methylation processes which are essential for various cellular functions like epigenetic modifications and gene expression regulation. It forms part of a complex network where it acts as a metabolic regulator. By inhibiting methyltransferase enzymes it directly controls the levels of SAM affecting the methylation status in cells. As a feedback inhibitor Adenosyl Homocysteine balances methyl group transfers critical for cellular function.

Pathways

Adenosyl homocysteine sits at the intersection of the methionine and homocysteine metabolic pathways. It maintains a delicate balance necessary for transmethylation reactions. The methionine cycle and homocysteine metabolism pathways are linked by this compound. Adenosyl Homocysteine connects with other proteins such as S-Adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase and methionine synthase which are important for transferring methyl groups important for cellular processes.

Disruptions in Adenosyl Homocysteine levels contribute to conditions like cardiovascular diseases and hyperhomocysteinemia. Elevated levels of homocysteine resulting from inefficient conversion of Adenosyl Homocysteine are associated with these disorders. Within these diseases adenosyl homocysteine relates to proteins like homocysteine methyltransferase that influence methionine metabolism. The imbalance involves increased risk factors for vascular diseases establishing Adenosyl Homocysteine as a target for therapeutic intervention and research.
