AP3S1 also known as adaptor-related protein complex 3 sigma-1 is a subunit of the AP-3 adaptor complex. This protein plays a role in the sorting and trafficking of membrane proteins to lysosomes and other intracellular compartments. AP3S1 is expressed in a variety of tissues with notable expression in brain and immune cells. It has a mass of approximately 19 kDa. The protein serves as a critical component for the proper targeting and vesicle budding processes within cells.
Biological function summary

AP3S1 interacts as a part of the multisubunit AP-3 complex. This complex consists of four subunits and participates in the transport of proteins from the trans-Golgi network to lysosomes. The presence of AP3S1 ensures the selective packaging of proteins into vesicles destined for lysosomal compartments. This function contributes to cellular homeostasis and effective degradation of lysosomal substrates. The AP-3 complex including AP3S1 is therefore integral to intracellular protein sorting.

Another related protein dysbindin has been associated with schizophrenia suggesting the AP-3 complex might affect neurological pathways through protein sorting errors. It facilitates the budding of vesicles from the Golgi membrane and may be directly involved in trafficking to lysosomes.
