ATP6V1C2 also known as V-type proton ATPase subunit C 2 is part of the vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase) complex. This protein performs a mechanical role in transporting hydrogen ions (H+) across cellular membranes which is essential for acidification within various intracellular compartments. The ATP6V1C2 subunit has a molecular mass of approximately 43 kDa. Researchers find that its expression occurs widely throughout the body with notable presence in tissues like the kidney and brain.
Biological function summary

ATP6V1C2 is integral to the V-ATPase complex which participates in maintaining intracellular pH and ion homeostasis. This complex helps in organellar acidification influencing processes such as protein degradation receptor-mediated endocytosis and synaptic vesicle cycling. Among its biological roles ATP6V1C2 ensures the proper function of lysosomal and endosomal pathways promoting cellular metabolism and nutrient processing.

Pathways

ATP6V1C2 has critical roles in biomolecular pathways involved in pH regulation and vesicular trafficking. It is central to pathways like lysosomal acidification and endocytosis. ATP6V1C2 works in conjunction with other V-ATPase subunits such as ATP6V0A4 to facilitate these processes. Through these pathways ATP6V1C2 modulates both macromolecule turnover and neurotransmitter release showcasing its versatile role in cellular metabolism.

ATP6V1C2 links to conditions such as distal renal tubular acidosis and neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations or dysfunction in its associated V-ATPase unit can lead to impaired acidification of urine or defective lysosomal degradation respectively. The protein has interactions with ATP6V0D1 highlighting its involvement in these diseases. By understanding ATP6V1C2’s role researchers can investigate new therapeutic approaches for related disorders.

타겟 정보

Subunit of the V1 complex of vacuolar(H+)-ATPase (V-ATPase), a multisubunit enzyme composed of a peripheral complex (V1) that hydrolyzes ATP and a membrane integral complex (V0) that translocates protons (By similarity). V-ATPase is responsible for acidifying and maintaining the pH of intracellular compartments and in some cell types, is targeted to the plasma membrane, where it is responsible for acidifying the extracellular environment (By similarity). Subunit C is necessary for the assembly of the catalytic sector of the enzyme and is likely to have a specific function in its catalytic activity (By similarity).
