C10orf54 also known as VISTA (V-domain Ig suppressor of T cell activation) or PD-1H is a protein found on the surface of immune cells. It has a mass of approximately 50-55 kDa and shows expression mainly in hematopoietic tissues including myeloid cells and tissues of the immune system. This protein acts as a negative immune checkpoint regulator playing a role in modulating immune responses and maintaining immune homeostasis.
Biological function summary

C10orf54 affects the activity of T cells significantly. It functions by interacting with T cell receptors to inhibit excessive immune responses. Although not part of a larger complex C10orf54 modulates immune cell interactions on its own influencing the balance between co-stimulatory and inhibitory signals that control T cell activation and proliferation.

Pathways

C10orf54 integrates into the immune regulation processes within the immune checkpoint pathways and T cell receptor signaling pathway. It closely relates to proteins such as PD-1 and CTLA-4 which are other known immune checkpoint regulators. These pathways involve critical control points for preventing autoimmunity and regulating immune tolerance.

C10orf54 associates particularly with cancer and autoimmune disorders. Its involvement in cancer arises from its ability to suppress anti-tumor immune responses often making tumors more resistant to immune-mediated destruction.
