In the mechanical aspect cysteine works as a building block of proteins by forming disulfide bonds that are important for the structural stability of proteins. These bonds particularly influence protein folding processes. Cysteine is expressed in many tissues and cells throughout the body with higher levels often observed in the liver skeletal muscles and skin.
Biological function summary

Cysteine can be found as a component of protein complexes involved in redox signaling.
