Epithelial cell-related gene 2 commonly known as ECRG-2 is a protein involved in several cellular processes. The protein has a molecular mass of about 8 kDa. Researchers have found it expressed mainly in the epithelium especially in esophageal tissues but it also appears in several other tissue types. ECRG-2 plays a role in cell differentiation proliferation and apoptosis meaning it has an important function in maintaining healthy cell behavior and tissue development.
Biological function summary

ECRG-2 influences gene expression and impacts cellular responses to stress and injury. It functions as a tumor suppressor and has shown activity inhibiting proliferation of cancer cells. ECRG-2 is not part of any known complex but interacts with various other proteins supporting its suppressor functions. This interaction helps it to regulate cell cycle and protect cells from malignant transformations.

Pathways

ECRG-2 influences several molecular pathways including the p53 pathway. p53 is a critical pathway in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis.
