ELOVL6 sometimes also known as LCE functions as an enzyme involved in the elongation of long-chain fatty acids. It primarily elongates saturated and monounsaturated fatty acyl-CoAs especially those that are C16:0 and C18:0 contributing to the production of very long-chain fatty acids. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 29 kilodaltons and exists mainly in the endoplasmic reticulum. ELOVL6 is ubiquitously expressed with notable presence in the liver adipose tissues and brain where it plays significant roles in lipid metabolism.
Biological function summary

This enzyme modifies fatty acids therefore impacting the lipid composition of cellular membranes and lipid droplets. This endoplasmic reticulum-bound enzymatic process allows the addition of 2 carbons to the chain of long- and very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) per cycle. Condensing enzyme that elongates fatty acids with 12, 14 and 16 carbons with higher activity toward C16 : 0 acyl-CoAs. Catalyzes the synthesis of unsaturated C16 long chain fatty acids and, to a lesser extent, C18 : 0 and those with low desaturation degree. May participate in the production of saturated and monounsaturated VLCFAs of different chain lengths that are involved in multiple biological processes as precursors of membrane lipids and lipid mediators.
