GALP also known as Galanin-like peptide is a neuropeptide involved in various metabolic processes. The protein has a mass of approximately 7.6 kDa. GALP is mainly expressed in the hypothalamus a brain region critical for regulating energy balance and reproductive functions. In addition to the hypothalamus GALP expression occurs in peripheral tissues including the pituitary gland and the testis indicating its broader role in physiological processes.
Biological function summary

GALP functions as a regulatory factor in appetite control and energy balance. It does not operate as part of a larger protein complex but it interacts with galanin receptors. These interactions can modulate neuroendocrine and behavioral responses. GALP plays significant roles in influencing feeding behavior body weight and reproductive hormone release making it important in maintaining homeostasis.

Isoform 1. Hypothalamic neuropeptide which binds to the G-protein-coupled galanin receptors (GALR1, GALR2 and GALR3). Involved in a large number of putative physiological functions in CNS homeostatic processes, including the regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion.. Isoform 2. Exhibits potent and dose-dependent vasoconstrictor and anti-edema activity in the cutaneous microvasculature, a physiologic effects which does not appear to be mediated via GALR1 or GALR2. Exhibits antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacterias, inducing bacterial membrane blebbing (PubMed : 23537644).
