GRINA also known as Glutamate Receptor Ionotropic NMDA Associated Protein 5 or NMDAR Subunit 5 is a protein encoded by the GRINA gene. It is a transmembrane protein involved in the regulation of ion channels specifically interacting with the NMDA receptor complexes. GRINA weighs approximately 50 kDa and is expressed predominantly in the central nervous system notably in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Its presence in these regions indicates its role in neuronal communication and signaling.
Biological function summary

The GRINA protein modulates calcium ion flux in neurons influencing neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity. This role makes it an important component in maintaining normal neurotransmission. GRINA associates with NMDA receptor complexes which consist of several other subunits.
