Biological function summary
The GRINA protein modulates calcium ion flux in neurons influencing neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity. This role makes it an important component in maintaining normal neurotransmission. GRINA associates with NMDA receptor complexes which consist of several other subunits. This association governs the receptor's function in synaptic signaling and plasticity affecting learning and memory processes.
Pathways
GRINA participates in the glutamatergic synapse and calcium signaling pathways. In these pathways GRINA works alongside the protein GRIN1 a critical subunit of the NMDA receptor complex to facilitate ion flow and synaptic transmission. This involvement situates GRINA as an important regulatory factor in neuronal activity and signal propagation within the brain.
