GULP also known as "CED-6" in some studies is a protein that contributes to several cellular processes. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 34 kDa and demonstrates functional activity in various tissues although it most often appears in immune cells such as macrophages. GULP facilitates the engulfment and clearance of apoptotic cells by binding to internalizing receptors. These interactions are key for maintaining tissue homeostasis and preventing undesirable immune responses.
Biological function summary

The function of GULP extends beyond simple phagocytosis. It participates as part of a multi-protein complex that regulates cytoskeletal rearrangements necessary for cell movement and engulfment. This includes interactions with actin within the cells to drive membrane dynamics. The GULP protein is integral in coordinating intracellular signaling cascades that lead to efficient uptake and processing of cellular debris.

Pathways

The role of GULP is significant in the apoptotic cell clearance pathway. It regulates signals that engage with the Rho family of GTPases which modify cytoskeletal structures for phagocytosis. In addition GULP interacts with proteins like Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (RAC1) another component in controlling actin cytoskeleton dynamics.
