HOXA13 also known as Homeobox protein Hox-A13 is a transcription factor belonging to the homeobox gene family. It plays an essential role in regulating gene expression during developmental processes. This protein weighs approximately 38 kDa. Researchers find HOXA13 expression in tissues of the limb and genitourinary tract during embryogenesis. It shows differential expression patterns which are significant in patterning these anatomical structures.

Biological function summary

Homeobox protein Hox-A13 influences limb and organ development. Its transcriptional regulation ensures proper tissue and organ formation by directing cellular differentiation. It forms a complex with other proteins necessary for executing specific genetic programs during development facilitating the fine-tuning of gene networks critical for morphogenesis of limbs and genitourinary systems.

Pathways

Homeobox protein Hox-A13 participates in the retinoic acid signaling pathway impacting cellular growth and differentiation. It also operates within the Wnt signaling pathway which is essential for developmental patterning. Through these pathways HOXA13 interacts with proteins such as HOXD13 and GLI3 which also participate in limb development and cellular differentiation processes creating a network that coordinates developmental signals.

Aberrant function of Homeobox protein Hox-A13 can lead to hand-foot-genital syndrome a condition involving limb and genitourinary tract malformations. Mutations or dysregulation in HOXA13 contribute to syndromes characterized by deformities in limb and organ structure. Additionally researchers link HOXA13 to the digenic inheritance of certain congenital malformations where it interacts with proteins like HOXD13 indicating its role in complex genetic disorders associated with developmental defects.
