HOXA7 also known as Homeobox A7 is a transcription factor in the HOX family involved in regulating gene expression. This protein plays a role in developmental processes by binding to specific DNA sequences. It has a molecular weight of around 25 kDa. The expression of HOXA7 occurs in various tissues but it is especially abundant in embryonic tissues indicating its role in early developmental stages. The protein’s activity is important for proper cell differentiation and positioning within developing organisms.
Biological function summary

HOXA7 participates in controlling the developmental blueprint of an organism. It acts as a transcriptional regulator within the family of homeobox genes which functions in concert to ensure organs and tissues develop in the correct order and positions. HOXA7 forms a part of the larger homeobox complex interacting with other HOX proteins to coordinate the precise expression of target genes. Disruptions in its activity can lead to misregulation of these essential developmental processes.

Pathways

The mechanistic activities of HOXA7 relate closely to the Wnt signaling pathway and the cell differentiation pathway. It cooperates with other HOX proteins such as HOXA9 and HOXB4 to modulate gene expression during development. The Wnt signaling pathway in particular plays an important role in cell proliferation and axis patterning. Its interaction with Wnt-related proteins helps achieve spatial and temporal regulation of developmental genes contributing to the finely tuned process of morphogenesis.

Aberrations in HOXA7 expression or function link to certain cancers and developmental disorders. In leukemia researchers observe abnormal expressions of HOXA7 suggesting it may contribute to the dysregulation of cell proliferation associated with this disease. Additionally the protein relates to skeletal malformations where its dysfunction results in improper bone development. In these contexts HOXA7 may interact with proteins such as MEIS1 which can modify its activity and impact cellular outcomes associated with these conditions.
