MKX also known as Mohawk Homeobox is a transcription factor with a mass of approximately 36 kDa. This protein plays a role in gene regulation by binding to DNA sequences and influencing the expression of target genes. MKX mainly expresses in mesodermal tissues especially in skeletal muscles tendons and ligaments during development. Its expression is spatially and temporally regulated reflecting its involvement in tissue-specific processes.
Biological function summary

MKX influences the formation and maintenance of fibrous connective tissues. It does not function as part of a known complex but interacts with other transcription factors to regulate gene expression patterns essential for tissue differentiation and function. MKX is involved in orchestrating the development of musculoskeletal structures by modulating the expression of genes related to extracellular matrix composition and organization. Through these actions MKX contributes to the structural integrity and mechanical properties of tendons and ligaments.

Pathways

MKX plays a role in the tendon development and TGF-β signaling pathways. In these pathways MKX coordinates with proteins such as Scleraxis (SCX) and Tenomodulin (TNMD) to promote tendon and ligament differentiation.
