MOXD1 also known as monooxygenase DBH-like 1 or MOX is a member of the copper type II ascorbate-dependent monooxygenase family. It functions mechanistically by catalyzing the hydroxylation of its substrates a process essential for certain biochemical conversions. The mass of MOXD1 is approximately 82 kDa. MOXD1 expresses prominently in the central nervous system particularly in the brain and can also be found in other tissues at varying levels.
Biological function summary

The enzyme MOXD1 plays a role in neuroactive substrate modifications contributing to neurotransmitter biosynthesis. MOXD1 does not form a known complex but interacts with copper ions that act as cofactors which are necessary for its enzymatic activity. The action of MOXD1 impacts cellular processes by regulating key elements within the neurochemical framework aiding in overall neuronal function.

Pathways

MOXD1 integrates into the catecholamine biosynthetic pathway. This pathway is significant for the production of amine neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine. MOXD1 relates to dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) another enzyme in this pathway that also uses copper as a cofactor. Both enzymes contribute to the maintenance of catecholamine balance in the nervous system.
