Biological function summary
The protein ODR4/TTG1 influences hair and trichome development particularly in plants like Arabidopsis as it participates in the development of structures on the plant surface. It forms part of a complex interacting with Glabra1 and Transparent Testa Glabra2 proteins to regulate organ identity and epidermal cell differentiation. This regulatory action is essential for the correct formation and spacing of trichomes which are small hair-like projections on the surface of leaves and stems critical for plant defense.
Pathways
ODR4/TTG1 integrates into the signaling and developmental pathways that guide epidermal cell fate and differentiation. The protein plays a significant role in the well-established MYB-bHLH-WD40 transcriptional complex pathway which is pivotal in the regulation of gene expression patterns necessary for trichome development. Important proteins related through these pathways include the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors which coordinate with ODR4/TTG1 to determine epidermal cell outcomes.
