Opn1mw also known as medium-wavelength-sensitive opsin 1 is a protein important in human vision. It is a member of the opsin family of proteins and has a molecular mass of approximately 39 kDa. This protein is expressed primarily in the cone photoreceptor cells of the retina. These cells are responsible for processing visual signals when exposed to medium-wavelength light which typically includes green hues. Opn1mw functions as a light-sensitive receptor by binding to chromophores allowing it to participate actively in phototransduction.
Biological function summary

Cone photoreceptor cells use Opn1mw to detect and respond to specific wavelengths of light which is essential for proper color vision. Opn1mw forms part of the phototransduction complex which converts photon absorption into electrical signals interpreted by the brain as vision. This conversion process involves changes in the conformation of the opsin protein leading to a cascade of intracellular events that ultimately result in a nerve impulse. Without the proper function of this protein the capacity to distinguish medium-wavelength colors would be impaired.

Pathways

Opn1mw interacts with the phototransduction pathway an intricate signal transduction pathway essential for vision. This pathway involves several other proteins such as transducin and phosphodiesterase which help propagate the electrical signal initiated by light absorption by Opn1mw. Another significant interaction is with the cGMP pathway where cGMP levels decrease in response to the activation of Opn1mw leading to hyperpolarization of the photoreceptor cell membrane.

The malfunction of Opn1mw is associated with conditions such as color vision deficiencies and retinitis pigmentosa. Color vision deficiency specifically green color blindness occurs when mutations affect the function or expression of Opn1mw disrupting its role in distinguishing green hues. Additionally links exist between Opn1mw mutations and retinitis pigmentosa a degenerative retinal disorder. In this context Opn1mw-related abnormalities often intersect with other proteins related to these diseases like rhodopsin within retinal cells contributing to progressive visual impairment.
