Biological function summary
Pro-EGF plays a critical role in cellular growth and differentiation. Through its conversion to active EGF it interacts with the EGF receptor initiating a cascade of signaling events. This process regulates processes such as inflammation wound healing and embryonic development. Pro-EGF does not form part of a higher-order complex but acts through interactions with its receptor to elicit biological responses.
Pathways
Pro-EGF's function is integral to the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway. It activates this pathway through EGFR binding promoting cellular proliferation and differentiation processes. Pro-EGF also participates in the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway influencing cell survival and growth. Its interaction with EGFR is closely related to other growth factors like TGF-alpha which share the same receptor binding activity.
