The Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) type B G protein also known as the glycoprotein B is a critical component of the RSV envelope. The mass of this protein is approximately 90 kDa. This protein plays a mechanical role by facilitating the attachment of the virus to the host cell surface which is an essential step for viral entry and infection. The G protein expresses on the surface of the RSV particles and helps the virus navigate the host environment thereby enhancing its ability to infect respiratory epithelial cells.
Biological function summary

The RSV type B G protein functions in immune evasion by modulating the host's immune response. It is not part of a larger multiprotein complex but interacts with components of the host immune system to subvert normal immune activities. For example it can interfere with host cell signaling pathways that would typically lead to a robust immune response allowing the virus to persist and propagate within the host tissues.

Pathways

RSV type B G protein actively participates in the infection process by engaging key cellular pathways like the integrin signaling pathway. The G protein interacts with proteins on the host cell surface such as heparan sulfate proteoglycans and CX3C chemokine receptor 1 (CX3CR1) aiding viral attachment and entry. These interactions facilitate subsequent downstream signaling that promotes viral penetration and replication within the host cells.

RSV type B G protein associates closely with conditions like bronchiolitis and pneumonia especially in infants and young children. Its role in immune modulation directly links to how these diseases manifest and progress. Additionally other viral proteins like the F protein contribute to similar pathologies through synergistic actions with the G protein worsening respiratory conditions and increasing the severity of respiratory tract infections.

타겟 정보

Isoform Membrane-bound glycoprotein G. Attaches the virion to the host cell membrane by interacting with heparan sulfate, initiating the infection. Interacts with host CX3CR1, the receptor for the CX3C chemokine fractalkine, to modulate the immune response and facilitate infection. Unlike the other paramyxovirus attachment proteins, lacks both neuraminidase and hemagglutinating activities.. Isoform Secreted glycoprotein G. Helps the virus escape antibody-dependent restriction of replication by acting as an antigen decoy and by modulating the activity of leukocytes bearing Fc-gamma receptors.
