Rhp51 also known in some organisms as Rad51 is a protein involved in homologous recombination a process essential for DNA repair. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 37 kDa. Rhp51 functions by facilitating the search for homology and strand pairing between homologous DNA sequences. It is expressed in various tissues where cells undergo active division making it especially prominent in rapidly proliferating tissues and germ cells.
Biological function summary

Rhp51 facilitates critical steps of homologous recombination through its interactions with DNA and other repair proteins. Rhp51 is part of a protein complex that includes Rad52 which assists Rhp51 in its function. Through its role in DNA repair Rhp51 maintains genome integrity prevents mutations and supports proper chromosomal segregation during cell division. It interacts with both the single-stranded DNA and other DNA repair proteins to ensure accurate repair processes within the cell.

Pathways

Rhp51 is an integral component of the DNA damage response and repair pathways specifically the homologous recombination repair pathway. It interacts closely with proteins like BRCA2 which mediates the loading of Rhp51 onto DNA. In addition Rhp51 collaborates closely with Rad54 a protein that aids in the resolution of junctions formed during recombination. These interactions are critical for repairing double-strand breaks a common type of DNA damage.

Mutations or dysfunctions in Rhp51 can lead to genomic instability contributing to an increased risk of cancer development particularly breast and ovarian cancers. Its role in cancer is tightly connected with BRCA1 and BRCA2 proteins whose mutations are well-known cancer risk factors. Moreover improper function of Rhp51 may result in Bloom syndrome a rarer disorder characterized by genomic instability where Rhp51's coaction with the BLM protein is affected leading to defective DNA repair mechanisms.
