SALL2 also known as Sal-like protein 2 is a transcription factor with a molecular mass of approximately 120 kDa. It functions as a DNA-binding protein that regulates gene expression. SALL2 contains conserved zinc finger motifs that facilitate its binding to target DNA sequences influencing transcriptional activation or repression of specific genes. The protein is mainly expressed in the central nervous system retina and hematopoietic tissues where it exerts its regulatory functions.
Biological function summary

This protein plays essential roles in neural development and cell cycle regulation. SALL2 belongs to the SALL family of proteins which are key in developmental processes. It interacts with other members of this family to form transcriptional regulatory complexes modulating the expression of genes involved in differentiation growth and apoptosis. Through these complexes SALL2 can affect various cellular responses including proliferation and survival.

Pathways

Several cellular processes depend on this protein's activity. SALL2 significantly influences the p53 pathway which is important for DNA damage response and cell cycle control. Interaction with p53-related proteins results in modulation of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Additionally the retinoblastoma (RB) pathway important for controlling cell proliferation is impacted by SALL2 as it interacts with RB protein to regulate cell cycle progression in response to external growth signals.

SALL2 has been implicated in certain cancers particularly in the context of tumor suppression. Alterations in SALL2 expression or function can lead to uncontrolled cell proliferative disorders making it a potential biomarker for cancer. Furthermore studies suggest a link between SALL2 and retinal disorders due to its expression in retinal cells and interactions with retina-specific proteins. Understanding the role of SALL2 in these diseases offers insights into therapeutic targets and strategies for future interventions.
