추가 정보

Scavenger Receptor BI and BII also known as SR-BI and SR-BII play key roles in lipid metabolism. SR-BI is a protein that usually has a mass of approximately 82 kDa and SR-BII is a variant with a slightly different C-terminal sequence. Both isoforms express mainly in the liver and steroidogenic tissues. They serve as high-density lipoprotein (HDL) receptors facilitating lipid transfer and removal of cholesterol from these lipoproteins.
Biological function summary

These receptors maintain cholesterol homeostasis in the body. SR-BI and SR-BII function as part of the HDL complex enabling selective uptake of cholesterol esters into cells. This process supports steroidogenesis and cellular lipid distribution ensuring that cells meet their lipid needs effectively. Through these processes the receptors influence not only lipid metabolism but also bile acid synthesis.

Pathways

Scavenger Receptor BI and BII engage in cholesterol transport and reverse cholesterol transport pathways. These receptors work closely with proteins like apolipoprotein A-I and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) essential in these pathways. By mediating cholesterol trafficking from peripheral tissues back to the liver they play a significant role in maintaining systemic cholesterol balance.

Scavenger Receptor BI and BII link to atherosclerosis and liver disease. An imbalance in their activity can lead to altered cholesterol levels contributing to plaque formation in blood vessels. Additionally their dysfunction may relate to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) where interactions with other proteins such as very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) demonstrate an impact. Understanding these interactions helps in exploring potential therapeutic interventions.
