Biological function summary
Thiol-disulfide exchange reactions facilitated by SELT support proper cellular differentiation and protein folding. SELT is not known to form part of a larger protein complex and exerts its function individually within cells. Its role in redox homeostasis influences many cellular processes including growth and apoptosis. SELT activity affects cellular redox balance which is significant for overall cell health and survival.
Pathways
SELT's activity contributes to important biological pathways such as the oxidative stress response pathway and the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway. In the oxidative stress response SELT acts alongside proteins like glutathione peroxidases to neutralize reactive oxygen species. Within the ERAD pathway SELT assists in maintaining homeostasis by ensuring misfolded proteins are correctly managed therefore working closely with key proteins like ubiquitin in protein degradation processes.
