Semenogelin II also known as SGII is a protein that plays a significant role in human reproduction. It is a major component of semen and weighs approximately 50 kDa. This protein is primarily expressed in the seminal vesicles. SGII is closely related to Semenogelin I (SGI) and shares a high degree of sequence homology. The presence of these proteins is important to semen coagulation affecting viscosity and ultimately fertility.
Biological function summary

Semenogelin II contributes to the formation of the seminal coagulum which provides an essential function in immobilizing sperm temporarily after ejaculation. This protein interacts within a complex network involving prostate-specific antigen (PSA) which partially degrades SGII to liquefy the coagulum allowing sperm motility and facilitating fertilization.
