Biological function summary
SERPINB13 regulates proteolytic processes by forming stable complexes with target proteases. It acts as an inhibitor to prevent unwanted protease activity keeping cellular proteolysis balanced. Although not part of any protease complexes directly SERPINB13 aligns functionally with other members of the serpin family that regulate protease activity across different tissues. This regulation is important especially in epithelial tissue where frequent renewal occurs.
Pathways
SERPINB13 interacts with cellular mechanisms such as the extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation pathway. In this context it acts alongside proteins like matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that require tight regulation to prevent excessive tissue breakdown. Another associated pathway is the inflammation response pathway. Here it influences processes where protease-driven inflammation can lead to tissue damage connecting with other proteases that modulate inflammatory processes.
