SULT1C2 also known as sulfotransferase family 1C member 2 is an enzyme that catalyzes the sulfonation of molecules. It belongs to the sulfotransferase family and exhibits a molecular mass of approximately 34.2 kDa. This enzyme primarily expresses in human tissues with notable expression in the liver intestine and fetal tissues. SULT1C2 adds sulfonate groups to hydroxyl groups on substrates which influences the molecules’ activity and solubility.
Biological function summary

Sulfotransferase family 1C member 2 participates in the metabolism and detoxification of hormones neurotransmitters and xenobiotics. This enzyme does not typically function as part of a larger protein complex but acts individually to modify and regulate the activity and excretion of its substrates. Through sulfonation SULT1C2 contributes to the regulation of hormone activity and assists in the chemical defense mechanism of the organism by aiding the elimination of potential toxins.

Pathways

The activity of SULT1C2 plays a significant role in the sulfation pathway. It is important in the modification process which affects molecules in the metabolism particularly those involved in drug metabolism and the detoxification processes. SULT1C2 interacts with other enzymes from the sulfotransferase family that also contribute to these metabolic pathways such as SULT1A1 and SULT1E1.

Improper function or regulation of sulfotransferase family 1C member 2 has connections with certain cancers and liver disorders. Abnormal sulfonation by SULT1C2 may impact hormone regulation which relates to proliferative diseases like breast cancer. Furthermore liver disorders can arise when detoxification processes are impaired. Other sulfotransferases like SULT1A1 often show similar associations with these conditions highlighting a broader relationship between sulfonation activity and disease states.

타겟 정보

Sulfotransferase that utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) to catalyze the sulfate conjugation of phenolic compounds (PubMed : 10481272, PubMed : 10783263, PubMed : 9852044). Does not transfer sulfate to steroids, dopamine, acetaminophen, or alpha-naphthol (PubMed : 10481272, PubMed : 9852044). Except in mitochondria, where it can add sulfate to cholesterol producing cholesterol sulfate, which alters mitochondrial membrane organization, and impacts protein complex mobility increasing state-III respiration, thereby modulating mitochondrial respiration (By similarity). Catalyzes the sulfation of the carcinogenic N-hydroxy-2-acetylaminofluorene leading to highly reactive intermediates capable of forming DNA adducts, potentially resulting in mutagenesis (PubMed : 9852044).
