TAS2R8 also known as Taste receptor type 2 member 8 is a G protein-coupled receptor recognized for its involvement in bitter taste perception. This protein has a mass of approximately 36 kDa. TAS2R8 is expressed mainly in the taste receptor cells located in the tongue but is also observed in small amounts in other tissues such as the gastrointestinal tract. Unlike some of its counterparts TAS2R8 is specific to certain bitter taste compounds. The receptor functions by binding to bitter molecules initiating a series of intracellular events leading to the perception of bitterness.
Biological function summary

The TAS2R8 receptor plays a significant role beyond taste perception including potential roles in nutrient absorption and gastrointestinal health. It is a type of taste receptor involved in the detection of bitter compounds and it does not function as part of a larger receptor complex. TAS2R8 binds to different bitter substances which signals through intracellular pathways particularly involving the activation of G proteins. This receptor's activity can influence dietary preferences and nutritional intake in individuals.

Pathways

This taste receptor associates closely with signaling pathways related to taste transduction. The binding of a bitter compound to TAS2R8 activates G proteins leading to the activation of phospholipase C and the release of intracellular calcium a pathway that it shares with other bitter taste receptors like TAS2R10. These pathways modulate taste signal transduction impacting the broader sensory processing system within the human body.

TAS2R8 has potential implications in dietary behavior and possible gastrointestinal conditions. Variations in this receptor's function or expression might contribute to altered taste perception affecting dietary choices and nutritional health which may in turn affect metabolic disorders. Moreover the TAS2R family including TAS2R8 has been linked to certain gastrointestinal disorders where the taste receptors in the gut might influence gut motility and health. Interactions between TAS2R8 and other proteins such as TAS2R38 can provide further insights into its role in these contexts.

타겟 정보

Receptor that may play a role in the perception of bitterness and is gustducin-linked. May play a role in sensing the chemical composition of the gastrointestinal content. The activity of this receptor may stimulate alpha gustducin, mediate PLC-beta-2 activation and lead to the gating of TRPM5.
