Biological function summary
TPK1 plays an important role in energy metabolism. Thiamine pyrophosphate the product of TPK1 activity serves as an essential cofactor in several enzyme complexes including pyruvate dehydrogenase complex and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex. These complexes are involved in key metabolic pathways such as glycolysis and the citric acid cycle enabling the cell to produce energy efficiently. Therefore TPK1 activity supports energy production and cellular respiration.
