The TREX2 protein also known as the Three Prime Repair Exonuclease 2 functions as a DNA exonuclease involved in the repair of double-stranded DNA breaks. It has a molecular mass of approximately 31 kDa. This protein specializes in the removal of mismatched nucleotides in a 3' to 5' direction facilitating the maintenance of genomic integrity. TREX2 is mainly expressed in the skin thymus and testes suggesting a role in rapidly dividing tissues with high exposure to environmental stress.
