TRIM23 also known as ARD1 is a protein with an approximate mass of 77 kDa. It belongs to the tripartite motif (TRIM) family which is characterized by the presence of a RING finger domain a B-box domain and a coiled-coil region. TRIM23/ARD1 is expressed in various tissues including the heart and skeletal muscle. Its role as an E3 ubiquitin ligase is vital as it facilitates the ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of specific substrates contributing to protein homeostasis within cells.
Biological function summary

TRIM23/ARD1 plays a role in immune and inflammatory responses. It participates in the maturation of autophagosomes a process that is essential for cellular repair and stress responses. Rather than functioning independently TRIM23/ARD1 associates with complex cellular systems including the endosomal-lysosomal pathway influencing the degradation and recycling of cellular components.

Acts as an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase. Plays an essential role in autophagy activation during viral infection. Mechanistically, activates TANK-binding kinase 1/TBK1 by facilitating its dimerization and ability to phosphorylate the selective autophagy receptor SQSTM1. In order to achieve this function, TRIM23 mediates 'Lys-27'-linked auto-ubiquitination of its ADP-ribosylation factor (ARF) domain to induce its GTPase activity and its recruitment to autophagosomes (PubMed : 28871090)..
