White Spot Syndrome Virus VP664 also known as WSSV VP664 is a structural protein integral to the assembly and stability of the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) particles. This protein has an approximate molecular mass of 664 kDa and is expressed predominantly in infected crustaceans particularly shrimps infecting cells where viral replication and assembly occur. VP664 forms the primary structure of the viral envelope maintaining its integrity and facilitating the infection process.
Biological function summary

The protein plays a critical role in the formation of the viral capsid acting as a fundamental component of the virus's architecture. VP664 is a part of the complex that constitutes the protective external layer of the virus enabling it to survive in aquatic environments and effectively infect host organisms. This structural protein interacts with other viral proteins helping in the efficient assembly of viral particles necessary for the spread of the infection within and across host species.

Pathways

VP664 interacts with cellular pathways involved in protein synthesis and viral assembly. It is important to the viral entry pathway allowing the virus to penetrate host cells and establish infection. In this context VP664 exhibits functional interactions with other WSSV proteins such as VP28 which also play roles in viral entry and in overcoming host immune responses. This coordination ensures efficient viral propagation and maximizes viral replication within the host.

VP664 is associated with White Spot Disease a severe and economically significant disease affecting shrimp aquaculture. The structural role of VP664 in virus assembly makes it a target of interest in the study of viral pathogenicity and infection mechanisms. In infected hosts viral proteins like VP28 and VP664 work together to circumvent host defenses leading to widespread tissue damage and high mortality rates. Understanding these protein interactions is key to developing effective strategies for controlling and preventing White Spot Disease in affected crustacean populations.
