Biological function summary
GATC sequences play an important role in the bacterial DNA replication and repair process. They are critical in guiding DNA replication's regulation by methylation. These sequences are part of the mismatch repair system which maintains DNA integrity during replication by correcting errors. GATC sites methylated by Dam methylase are involved in the timing of DNA replication initiation also influencing other cellular processes.
Pathways
In prokaryotes GATC sequences integrate into the DNA replication and mismatch repair pathways. These pathways use the methylation of GATC sites to recognize and repair mismatches after DNA replication. Dam methylase is the enzyme responsible for methylating adenine residues within GATC important for marking the parental strands and distinguishing them from nascent DNA for repair mechanisms. The strand discrimination in mismatch repair relies on this methylation linking GATC closely with the aforementioned pathways.
