NCALD also known as Neurocalcin Delta is a calcium-binding protein that belongs to the neuronal calcium sensor (NCS) family. With a molecular mass of approximately 23 kDa it serves key roles in calcium signaling. The protein has wide expression being found mainly in the brain but it is also present in other tissues such as the retina and olfactory bulb. Its presence in these areas suggests an important role in neuronal functions.
Biological function summary

Neurocalcin Delta modulates signal transduction by affecting the activity of calcium-dependent enzymes and ion channels. It does so by binding calcium ions which causes a conformational change allowing it to interact with its target proteins. While NCALD does not typically form large protein complexes it often interacts with smaller complexes influencing their function.
