Biological function summary
The receptor facilitates the first step of olfactory signal transduction by binding specific odorant molecules. Transduction involves coupling with G proteins which then activate adenylate cyclase to convert ATP to cAMP. This increase in cAMP opens cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels resulting in changes in neuronal excitability that transmit signals to the brain. OR10X1 functions within a large family of olfactory receptors and does not exist alone; it is part of a vast network that distinguishes a wide array of smells.
Pathways
The involvement of OR10X1 in the signaling of olfactory pathways begins with the detection of odorant molecules. The receptor plays a role in the olfactory signaling pathway interacting closely with G proteins such as G_olf which is specific to the olfactory system. Another critical pathway is the cAMP-dependent signaling where OR10X1 regulates neuronal response to environmental odor cues by modulating cAMP levels. These interactions allow for precise olfactory discrimination essential for survival.
