Biological function summary
OSCAR plays a critical role in the differentiation and activation of osteoclasts which are cells involved in bone resorption. OSCAR forms part of an important signaling complex that interacts with adaptor proteins such as FcRγ triggering downstream signaling cascades. Its activation drives the expression of genes necessary for osteoclast development linking it to bone homeostasis and remodeling. OSCAR functions alongside other receptors to ensure proper skeletal maintenance.
Pathways
OSCAR's function is integrated into the RANK/RANKL pathway which is pivotal for osteoclast differentiation. The interaction of OSCAR with the FcRγ chain activates signaling pathways similar to those triggered by the RANK receptor. These include NF-κB and MAPK pathways which promote osteoclast maturation and activity. OSCAR also interacts indirectly with proteins like TRAF6 contributing to the regulation of bone metabolism.
