Biological function summary
Osteocrin participates in the modulation of bone growth and muscle activity. It exists as part of a non-complex pathway serving as a regulatory molecule for natriuretic peptides. Osteocrin modulates the effects of natriuretic peptides by preventing their binding to clearance receptors which increases their bioavailability and prolonged action. This action impacts vascular physiology and growth regulation.
Pathways
Osteocrin plays a significant role in the natriuretic peptide signaling pathway. In this pathway it functions closely with proteins such as ANP (atrial natriuretic peptide) and BNP (brain natriuretic peptide). These proteins engage in blood pressure and volume regulation by causing vasodilation and promoting natriuresis. Osteocrin modulates the effectiveness of this pathway through its interaction with NPR-C enhancing the functions by extending the half-life of the active peptides involved.

Hormone that acts as a regulator of dendritic growth in the developing cerebral cortex in response to sensory experience (PubMed : 27830782). Induced in the brain following membrane depolarization and inhibits dendritic branching in neurons of the developing cortex (PubMed : 27830782). Probably acts by binding to natriuretic peptide receptor NPR3/NPR-C, thereby preventing binding between NPR3/NPR-C and natriuretic peptides, leading to increase cGMP production (By similarity).
