Biological function summary
RAB36 regulates intracellular vesicle trafficking which is essential for proper cellular function. It does this by controlling vesicle movement along cytoskeletal tracks and facilitating the fusion of vesicles with their target membranes. RAB36 operates independently not forming part of any known complex but it might interact with other proteins that contribute to the same biological processes in the cell.
Pathways
RAB36 participates in the regulation of membrane trafficking pathways which are fundamental for cellular homeostasis and communication. These pathways indicate its association with proteins such as RAB7 and RAB9 both of which are also part of the RAB family and share roles in vesicular transport. RAB36 is particularly addressed in exocytic pathways influencing the delivery of proteins and lipids to the cell surface.

The small GTPases Rab are key regulators of intracellular membrane trafficking, from the formation of transport vesicles to their fusion with membranes. Rabs cycle between an inactive GDP-bound form and an active GTP-bound form that is able to recruit to membranes different sets of downstream effectors directly responsible for vesicle formation, movement, tethering and fusion.
