Ribulose-15-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase often known as RuBisCO plays an important role in the process of carbon fixation. RuBisCO catalyzes the reaction between carbon dioxide and ribulose-15-bisphosphate a five-carbon sugar resulting in two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate. The enzyme's mass is about 550 kilodaltons making it one of the most abundant proteins in the world. Expression of RuBisCO predominantly occurs in the chloroplasts of photosynthetic organisms particularly in plants algae and certain bacteria.
Biological function summary

RuBisCO initiates the Calvin Cycle acting as the enzyme that drives the conversion of inorganic carbon dioxide into organic compounds. The protein exists as part of a larger complex comprising eight large subunits and eight small subunits which contribute to its catalytic effectiveness. This function is important for the synthesis of sugars that support plant growth. The enzyme also plays a role in photorespiration by fixing oxygen although this process is less efficient compared to carbon fixation.

Pathways

RuBisCO plays a central role in the carbon fixation pathway of photosynthesis enabling the conversion of light energy into chemical energy gained from carbohydrates. It is critical for the Calvin Cycle and interacts with other proteins such as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase during the pathway. Secondly RuBisCO contributes to the photorespiratory pathway though its affinity for oxygen can cause competition with NADP+ reduction during photosynthesis. Interactions with RuBisCO activase are necessary for maintaining its activity under varying conditions.

RuBisCO's efficiency is connected to plant stress responses and adaptability influencing crop yields and food security. Under certain conditions RuBisCO is less effective leading to increased photorespiration and decreased plant productivity especially during drought conditions. Alterations in RuBisCO activity influenced by related proteins like RuBisCO activase can contribute to reduced efficiencies in carbon dioxide fixation impacting plant growth and potential food resources though this is more of an agricultural challenge than a human disease.

일반 정보

기능

RuBisCO catalyzes two reactions : the carboxylation of D-ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate, the primary event in carbon dioxide fixation, as well as the oxidative fragmentation of the pentose substrate in the photorespiration process. Both reactions occur simultaneously and in competition at the same active site.

서열 유사성

Belongs to the RuBisCO large chain family. Type I subfamily.

Post-translational modifications

The disulfide bond which can form in the large chain dimeric partners within the hexadecamer appears to be associated with oxidative stress and protein turnover.
