  • Relevance
Myristic acid, also called tetradecanoic acid, is a common saturated fatty acid found in dairy products. Covalent attachment of fatty acids to proteins is a common form of protein modification which has been shown to influence both structure and interaction with membranes. Myristoylation of proteins involves the NH(2)-terminal glycine residues forming an amide bond with the 14-carbon saturated acyl group. Myristic acid is also commonly added to a penultimate nitrogen terminus glycine in receptor-associated kinases to confer the membrane localisation of the enzyme. This is achieved by the myristic acid having a high enough hydrophobicity to become incorporated into the fatty acyl core of the phospholipid bilayer of the plasma membrane of the eukaryotic cell.
