  • Function

Occurs in almost all aerobically respiring organisms and serves to protect cells from the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Promotes growth of cells including T-cells, B-cells, myeloid leukemia cells, melanoma cells, mastocytoma cells and normal and transformed fibroblast cells.
  • Involvement in disease

Defects in CAT are the cause of acatalasia (ACATLAS) [MIM:115500]; also known as acatalasemia. This disease is characterized by absence of catalase activity in red cells and is often associated with ulcerating oral lesions.
  • Sequence similarities

    Belongs to the catalase family.
  • Post-translational
    modifications

    The N-terminus is blocked.
  • Cellular localization

    Peroxisome.

Question

Wwe received the replacement vial of ab91026 today. It was still frozen on dry ice when we received it, but we observed the same green substance and brown threads in the frozen vial. This was also a different lot of the protein: CT 201001. Can we get a confirmation on what this protein is supposed to look like? We would like to get this resolved as soon as possible.

Answer

Thank you for contacting Abcam.

Having talked to the lab, they told me that frozen Catalase has the appearancethat you described. Therefore the vial is not contaminated as I first thought andso you can continue your experiments as normal.

If there is anything elseI can help you with, pleaselet me know.

Question

Mitosciences received a vial of ab91026 Catalase Protein Active Lot# ***** on January 4th, 2012 (Abcam order# *****). This vial was stored at -20C until yesterday, January 19, 2012, when contamination was observed in the frozen contents. There is green mold or fungus and brown threads observed in the vial. This vial had not been opened at our facility until yesterday, so we feel the vial was sent to us contaminated. Would we be able to receive a free replacement for this ASAP?
