Involvement in diseaseDefects in MERTK are the cause of retinitis pigmentosa type 38 (RP38) [MIM:613862]. RP38 is a retinal dystrophy belonging to the group of pigmentary retinopathies. Retinitis pigmentosa is characterized by retinal pigment deposits visible on fundus examination and primary loss of rod photoreceptor cells followed by secondary loss of cone photoreceptors. Patients typically have night vision blindness and loss of midperipheral visual field. As their condition progresses, they lose their far peripheral visual field and eventually central vision as well.

Flow cytometric analysis of Wild-type HAP1 (human chronic myelogenous leukemia near-haploid cell line, Right) / MERTK knockout HAP1 (Left) cells labeling MERTK with ab289636 at 1/500 dilution (Red) compared with Rabbit monoclonal IgG (ab172730) isotype control (Black) and an unlabelled control (cells without incubation with primary antibody and secondary antibody) (Blue). Goat Anti-Rabbit IgG (Alexa Fluor® 488, ab150081), at 1/2000 dilution was used as the secondary antibody. Gated on viable cells.
