FunctionGTP-binding protein involved in nucleocytoplasmic transport. Required for the import of protein into the nucleus and also for RNA export. Involved in chromatin condensation and control of cell cycle (By similarity). The complex with BIRC5/ survivin plays a role in mitotic spindle formation by serving as a physical scaffold to help deliver the RAN effector molecule TPX2 to microtubules. Acts as a negative regulator of the kinase activity of VRK1 and VRK2.
Enhances AR-mediated transactivation. Transactivation decreases as the poly-Gln length within AR increases.

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human breast carcinoma tissue stained for Ran using ab226195 at 1/5000 dilution in immunohistochemical analysis. Detection: DAB staining.
Ran was immunoprecipitated from HEK-293T (human epithelial cell line from embryonic kidney transformed with large T antigen) whole cell lysate (1 mg for IP, 20% of IP loaded) with ab226195 at 6 µg per reaction. Western blot was performed from the immunoprecipitate using ab226195 at 1 µg/ml.
Lane 1: ab226195 IP in HEK-293T whole cell lysate.
Lane 2: Control IgG IP in HEK-293T whole cell lysate.
Detection: Chemiluminescence with exposure time of 10 seconds.
