The epitope of the clone 23G3 is described and mapped to the C epsilon 3 domain in the following publication: Keegan AD et al : Characterization of new rat anti-mouse IgE monoclonals and their use along with chimeric IgE to further define the site that interacts with Fc epsilon RII and Fc epsilon RI. Mol Immunol 28 :1149-54 (1991). PUBMED:1717839 Indeed, both of these clones have been used together in ELISA in the two following publications: Michels, C et al: Infection with Syphacia obvelata (Pinworm) Induces Protective Th2 Immune Responses and Influences Ovalbumin-Induced Allergic Reactions, Infection and Immunity, October 2006, p. 5926-5932, Vol. 74, No. 10 "Total IgE was determined with monoclonal antibodies 84.1C and alkaline phosphatase-conjugated rat anti-IgE (23G3) for detection. " Mariller RG et al: Expand+IL-4Rα-responsive smooth muscle cells increase intestinal hypercontractility and contribute to resistance during acute Schistosomiasis, AJP - GI June 2010 vol. 298 no. 6 G943-G951 "Total IgE was determined with monoclonal antibodies 84.1C and alkaline phosphatase-conjugated rat anti-IgE (23G3) used for detection. " I do therefore think that they can be used together and will recognize different epitopes. However as you are planning to use them together in FACS staining, this might be different than using them together in an ELISA (as the IgE is bound and not free) and therefore the compatibility should be tested experimentally.
