RelevancePAI1 acts as 'bait' for tissue plasminogen activator, urokinase, and protein C. Its rapid interaction with TPA may function as a major control point in the regulation of fibrinolysis. PLAU specifically cleaves the zymogen plasminogen to form the active enzyme plasmin.
