FunctionThe heterodimer acts as a E1 ligase for SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3, and probably SUMO4. It mediates ATP-dependent activation of SUMO proteins followed by formation of a thioester bond between a SUMO protein and a conserved active site cysteine residue on UBA2/SAE2.

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human prostate carcinoma (left) and mouse renal cell carcinoma (right) stained for SAE2 / UBA2 using ab241611 at 1/200 dilution in immunohistochemical analysis. DAB staining.
SAE2 / UBA2 was immunoprecipitated from HeLa (human epithelial cell line from cervix adenocarcinoma) whole cell lysate (1 mg for IP, 20% of IP loaded) with ab241611 at 3 µg/mg lysate. Western blot was performed from the immunoprecipitate using ab241611 at 0.4 µg/ml.
Lane 1: ab241611 IP in HeLa whole cell lysate.
Lane 2: Control IgG IP in HeLa whole cell lysate.
Detection: Chemiluminescence with exposure time of 1 second.
