Plays a role in calcium signaling through modulation together with ANK2 of the ITP3R-dependent calcium efflux at the endoplasmic reticulum. Plays a role in several other cell functions including proliferation, survival and death. Originally identified for its ability to bind various psychoactive drugs it is involved in learning processes, memory and mood alteration.

ab53852 staining Sigma1-receptor in mouse lumbar spinal cord tissue (30 micron sections) by Immunohistochemistry (Free-floating sections). Blocking was done by incubating the sections for 1 hour at room temperature in NGS 10% + Triton 0.1% in PBS. The primary antibody was diluted 1/250 in 3% goat serum in PBS and incubated with the sample for 16 hours at 4°C. An Alexa fluor® 647-conjugated Goat anti-Rabbit polyclonal was used as the secondary antibody, diluted 1/500.
Sections were also immunostained with Hoechst dye (blue) to highlight nuclei. The green signal is GFP expressed in motor neuronal cells.
