      Function: TGF beta 1 is a multifunctional protein that controls proliferation, differentiation and other functions in many cell types. Many cells synthesize TGFB1 and have specific receptors for it. It positively and negatively regulates many other growth factors. It plays an important role in bone remodeling as it is a potent stimulator of osteoblastic bone formation, causing chemotaxis, proliferation and differentiation in committed osteoblasts. The inactive form consists of a TGFB1 homodimer non-covalently linked to a latency-associated peptide (LAP) homodimer. The inactive complex can contain a latent TGFB1-binding protein. The active form is a homodimer of mature TGFB1; disulfide-linked. Heterodimers of TGFB1/TGFB2 have been found in bone. Interacts with CD109 and DPT. Interacts with ASPN. Function: TGF beta 2 has suppressive effects on interleukin-2 dependent T-cell growth. Tissue specificity: TGF beta 1 is highly expressed in bone. Abundantly expressed in articular cartilage and chondrocytes and is increased in osteoarthritis (OA). Co-localizes with ASPN in chondrocytes within OA lesions of articular cartilage. Similarity: Both belong to the TGF-beta family.

    The lab let me know the following regarding their testing in mouse and rat:
    Even though there is 100% sequence homology with the mouse and rat proteins, we still typically test for cross reactivity before recommending them for use with other species. In this case, ab124894 did not produce a band at the predicted MW in WB with mouse and rat samples (brain, heart kidney, lung and spleen as well as C6, Raw264.7, PC-12, NIH/3T3 and L929 cell lines).
